IRI Publishes 2019 “The State of The Snack Industry” Report

In April 2019 IRI, a Chicago-based market research firm, published its annual report titled “How America Eats: the State of the Snack Industry”.

IRI’s research shows that almost half of all Americans (47%) eat three to four snacks a day; this number has been showing positive trend in recent years, gaining 4% over the last year. Snacking continues to be a powerful driver of food sales in the U.S., particularly successful in the Mass channel and eCommerce.

IRI identified four main growth drivers in the snacking category:

  • Flavor variety (unique flavors and flavor combinations)
  • Rise of Holistic Health (self-care and clean labels)
  • Packaging Innovation (sustainability and convenience)
  • Snacking Influencers (price, loyalty, packaging and promotions)

IRI points out that purchase drivers for snacks differ by Generational cohort, stressing the importance of understanding decision-making when developing and marketing snacks.
